My turn to drink the kool-aid

Okay, since we're on a "deserted island" kick here at Fictionistas, I'll play. If you could only bring 3 books with you onto this mythical island (which now also has your DVD player and iPod, LOL), what books would you take, and how would that differ from your high school list?

Here's the list from high school:

--Jane Eyre (I ADORE this story. Mr. Rochester--so mean! yet so dreamy!)
--Pride and Prejudice (I've been loving this for a long time)
--The Canterbury Tales (NERRRRRD! LOL)

And here's where it gets really hard, LOL. My present-day list (I'd be losing so much, though! *cries*):

--Jane Eyre (yeah, I'm still a big fan of this story, LOL)
--Collected Works of William Shakespeare (this will take care of many needs, including poetry)
--The Samurai's Garden (to get my Japanese fix--fantastic novel with beautiful prose)

Ask me this evening, though, and this list may be different. haha.

And now it's your turn to play!!

  1. The Collected Works of W. Shakespeare is a good one. I might add to that the tales of the Brothers Grim and the Bible. Another good one would be 1001 Arabian Nights.

OK, here's where I shock Rhonda (and Diana, and many others) by saying that I hated Jane Eyre. I actually can't stand the Bronte sisters. Blech. Wuthering Heights? Wish Catherine had just died on the moor.

Although I will admit I haven't read Jane Eyre as an adult, and I think I probably should, since so many friends of mine adore it, and I tend to have similar reading habits.

    OK...my list as a teen:
    1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
    2. Howard's End by EM Forster
    3. Princess by Jean P. Sassoon

    Today:
    1. Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen (loved it as a teen, but love it even more now)
    2. Hmmm...

OK, this is too hard. I can't limit it to 3. So I'll just name some of my faves of all time:
Spying in High Heels by Gemma Halliday
    The Kiss by Sophia Nash
A Great & Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
    The Collected Works of Shakespeare
Welcome to Temptation by Jenny Crusie
Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding
About a Boy by Nick Hornby
Kiss the Girls by James Patterson
The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (one of my faves as a kid and still today)
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
The Great Gadsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Plus the ones on my high school list.

Looks like I'm bringing along a lot of books with me to this island...

  6. Okay...I'm not a big movie watcher and I don't listen to music (sound annoys me. Books...that is something else entirely.

    1. Complete Harry Potter (yes, I'm a nerd)
    2. To Kill a Mockingbird
    3. A Thousand Splendid Suns (Khaled Hosseini)

...and if I could smuggle another one, Generation X by Douglas Coupland

  9. OK, don't kill me but I don't like Shakespeare. His stories, yes. Some of his words, yes. But it hurts my brain sometimes to interpret him when I'm not SEEING the play. Yes, I am bad. :)

I think I'd want THE OUTSIDERS by Hinton.

  10. For me, I think

    1) Complete Shakespeare
    2) Pride & Prejudice (or, if allowed, the Complete Jane Austen!)
    3) Something by Diana Wynne Jones...maybe one of those two-books-in-one-volume Chrestomanci books...

My high school list would probably have been:

    1) Lord of the Rings
    2) Little Women
    3) Charmed Life (Diana Wynne Jones) or maybe The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper)

    Hmmm...

I'd have to take The Mists of Avalon! Love that book!

Then I'd take The Shining! I never get tired of that one!

And I can't decide on the third one! Yeek! This is too hard... Maybe Good Omens by Neil Gaiman just to give me some giggles while I wait to be rescued... :)

    Fun question!

    Lisa :)

Have you all read the complete works of Shakespeare? I had to do it at Oxford and I can say there are a bunch of those I'd pass on.

    I would want:
    1) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (I know, the movie sucked the big one)
    2) To Kill a Mockingbird (the reason I went to law school)
    3) The complete collection of John Steinbeck.

In High School it would have been:
    1) Jane Eyre
    2) Tom Jones (so I'd never run out of available toilet paper)
    3) To Kill a Mockingbird

  13. Shakespeare rocks, Dana! :-) And for every "Troilus and Cressida" or "Timon of Athens" (neither of which I care to ever see again, or particularly want to read), there's a half-forgotten gem like Richard II or Prince John... And Shakespeare takes so darn long to read that by the time you finish reading all the plays, you'll have been rescued! ;-)

    (Yep. Total nerd. Sorry.)

Okay, now to prove that I have low tastes as well as high, I will confess that I loved the Hitchhikers movie! Well, half of it, anyway! And the rest was sort of okay too.
