It's peanut butter jelly time!

According to the National Peanut Board the average kid eats 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before they graduate high school. That's a lot of PB&J, my friend.

No one's exactly sure where the PB&J came from. Peanut butter wasn't invented until 1890. It then gained real popularity at the 1904 World's Fair and in the 1920s and 1930s, commercial brands of peanut butter like Peter Pan and Skippy hit the shelves. Around the same time, pre-sliced bread started showing up in American supermarkets. Still, there are no mentions of PB&J sandwiches before the 1940s.

Some historians believe the PB&J was invented by the American GI since both peanut butter and jelly were included in military rations during WWII. Wherever it came from, the classic combination of salty and sweet still finds its way into lunchboxes across the country.

What's not to love about a PB&J!

So I ask you: Smooth or creamy? Strawberry or grape? White or wheat? How did you eat your PB&J? Do you still eat them? Have any interesting combinations you love? Share!

  1. I go for grape jelly and it has to be Skipp super chunk or nothing for me. I like a lot of interest in my sandwich.

True story the other day on like at the grocery the lady in from of me had. White bread, peanut butter and jelly. Nothing else. So board I sent out a tweet on it and got lots of responses. PB &J is a hot topic. I still much blog on this lady and her bread saga.

  3. Smooth. Never chunky. Any jelly flavor, I love my PBJ on an english muffin.

Except grape, I LOATHE GRAPE jelly. bleck.
But grape jelly is my arch enemy.
    I HATE it.

its that fakey grape flavor I hate. Grapes in real life don't taste anything like grape jelly. Or grape Jolly Ranchers... also on my list of enemys.

  4. Wheat bread, smooth peanut butter (whatever national brand was on sale the last time I needed it at the store, currently Jif) and raspberry jelly. Strawberry jelly makes the roof of my mouth itch and I just can't stand grape jelly in any way, shape, or form. Never could.

I adore jelly and I ADORE peanut butter, but it's been years since I've had a PB&J sandwich. Possibly not since public school, actually.

I'm a big sucker for cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, or peanut butter and nutella sandwiches.

I will eat chunky and wheat, but the best is that really cheap white bread, smooth pb, and Smucker's strawberry.

  8. I haven't had a PB&J in a while, but Hubby eats them almost every day. Smooth store brand PB with peach J on wheat. I love chunky, but I never buy it because smooth lasts longer.

  9. I only eat Reesee's Peanutbutter. I know some areas don't have it, but it's maagic. Doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth.

Creamy girl... and I will admit that while I love raspberry and other preserves, I'm a Fluffernutter gal. All about the nutrition.
