Sugarcat

So I just found out one of my cats, Sam, is a diabetic. I was only vaguely aware that cats could be diabetics. Now I'm going to have to learn to give him a shot twice a day. Since we also have an asthmatic cat that needs an inhaler twice a day, I figure how hard can this be?

Pets are really something and an incident like this (Sam went into ketoacidosis, an often fatal-for-cats diabetic shock and is actually still in the hospital as I type this, making a remarkable recovery) makes you conscious of how much company they really are. When I'm at my desk, so is Sam, sprawled next to my lap top, his watchful eyes occasionally opening to see if I'm working or just shopping online.

Animals are a comfort. They are a source of unconditional love. They don't care if you're having a bad hair or you haven't brushed your teeth after eating garlic or that you're still wearing your pajamas at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. They love us the way we should love each other. Except I don't think jumping on someone when they walk through your front door to see if they're carrying food will ever catch on.

I can't imagine not having pets. No matter how many litter boxes I have to clean or vet bills I have to pay. They're just great additions to life. Do you have pets? I'd love to hear about them.

  1. I'd like to see a video of how you make the cat take an inhaler 2x a day.

Glad you caught Sam in time to help him.
    *whew!*
I have a dog - the Wombat. He's pretty awesome.

  2. A shot twice a day? I can barely get my cats on my lap! Well, actually, one cat is a huge lap cat the other one, not so nice;)

I give my old dog Charlie pills for his arthritis twice a day. Most days he gobbles it down, but some days it's like pouring acid down his throat. Best of luck with your kitty, my friend!

I have 3 cats. George is my favorite. I tell the other ones that, too.

  4. I can't imagine not having pets. But, I'm a dog person, not a cat person.

  5. Oh my! I'm glad Sam is on the road to recovery. Poor kitty. He looks a lot like my Gumby cat (deceased) so my heart especially goes out to him.

  7. Ack. I'm glad you got Sam to the vet in time. I ended up taking my cat Max to the vet yesterday, too, but he just has an abscess in his mouth. No shots, just two squirts of antibiotics every day. That's hard enough. I can't imagine shots or inhalers. You're an awesome person and your furbabies are very lucky to have you. =o)

  8. Poor Sam:( It's a good thing he has you!

We have three indoor cats, and two outdoors. One we brought with us to the country-- we adopted her from a shelter, so she's about 7. Snowball is part Siamese and we brought her in from the pole barn where she was born. She was only 3 weeks old--I thought she was hurt because her leg was sort of stuck in a wood pile, but I think she was just really cold. We have Fudge who we brought in from outdoors because she kept following us around and we couldn't resist her fuzziness. My husband said no more indoor cats. So, we have two outdoor cats now that we feed and built a little shelter for. My ten year old daughter is like a Cat Sevant-- she knows EVERYTHING about cats. Just ask her. LOL
