About a month ago my nephew bestowed upon me a guitar-shaped elastic in shocking purple. I didn't know, then, what it was. Nor did I grasp the magnitude of the gift. It was purple. And a guitar. That's a tough combo to get.

It was, of course, a silly bandz bracelet. Silly bandz are taking over the world. They are the new webkinz. They are the new pokemon card. They are the new thing.

What has surprised me? The number of high school and college aged kids I come across who are sporting a wrist full of color. I was at a cafe the other day and saw a girl with quite the collection. She was completely straight faced when she carefully explained that she buys the alphabet packages and puts "words of the day" on. (Last Thursday she was wearing five bands that spelled out F-O-C-U-S.)

I suppose the trend is relatively harmless and-- thank goodness-- cheap. Walgreens sells little packages crammed with a theme for around three bucks. I know because I grabbed a few and was hailed as a hero upon returning home to the nephews.

Me, I wear that purple guitar. It goes great with my diamonds. And if it's the thought that counts, it's just as priceless. I mean... come on... it's PURPLE. You can't GET purple!

  1. My kids, mind you they're 3 and 4, stalk me into buying them a pack every couple of days. I just recently begun keeping some for myself :) They really are cute and go with anything. Purple guitars rock! I want one!

  2. My niece is really into these. I admit, I've looked at a few packs. Haven't bought any yet tho.

  3. The schools around my house have banned these -- which, of course, has made them an even hotter commodity. I *may* have looked at a few packs in the store and wondered how in the world they would ever fit on my wrist. But hmm...I do love that word a day idea...

  4. why are they banned? That is crazy.

Back in my day (ahem) we gave each other safety pins with bead on them. or the woven bracelets. The cool thing to do was put all the pins you got on your shoelace.

  5. I believe they banned them because they are hot to trade and became a distraction in classrooms. They fit me without being snug, and I wear a size 7 bracelet.

I remember the beaded pins, Gwen!!

  6. My kids love these. I've had to urge my DD to not wear them to bed because she wakes up with impressions in her wrists. But cool. Can't do the double bracelet justice from the cool jellies I wore... (with jellie shoes too.)

  7. my friend's daughter gave me my first set the other day. She is now looking for a flamingo for me...because she knows I love them and could think of nothing cooler than giving Aunt Mel a Flamingo silly bandz
