Jurassic adventures...

There is this place in Northwest Arkansas called Dinosaur World. It's kind of like a concrete version of Jurassic Park. Except a concrete King Kong also resides there. And cavemen.

There's no real rhyme or reason to the park. It's a paleontological nightmare in reality. I mean, KING KONG lives among the dinosaurs. As do CAVEMEN. And a giant platypus.

But it's an awesome place in the world of super cheese. And I'm a huge fan of super cheese. Here's a blog that has some pics of Dinosaur World while it was still in its glory days: http://secretfunspot.blogspot.com/2008/03/abandoned-dinosaur-world.html

I noticed a nearby gravel pull-off which seemed as though it were created solely for illegal Dinosaur World entry. In the name of blogging I stopped the car, walked down an embankment and and briefly set foot in the forbidden lost world where I took these last couple of photos.
(boy that sounds vaguely familiar...)

And here's another post that contains some really good shots of the cheesefest:

http://www.agilitynut.com/dinos/ar2.html

Now that Dinosaur World is closed, I think we are truly missing out on one of life's greatest treasures. I'm thinking I should purchase this property, and turn it into a campground. "Your site is located in the Mastadon section. If you prefer, there will be a primo Pterodactyl spot available tomorrow." And I want an awesome restaurant and bar when we offer "Jurassic Park" type tours of the compound. C'mon...you know you wanna go...

happy National VCR day!

Seriously, do any of y'all even know what a VCR is anymore? I actually still own one. I'm pretty sure it works. I only own 2 VCR tapes: Bridget Jones Diary (also have the DVD) and the original Little Mermaid with the banned cover.

Other things we can celebrate this week?

June 7th
Daniel Boone Day
Dean Martin's Birthday

June 8th
Upsy-Daisy Day (everyone wake up happy!)
Bill of Rights Anniversary
Frank Lloyd Wright's Birthday

June 9th
Donald Duck's Birthday!

June 10th
Anniversary of the Ball Point Pen (w00t!)
Maurice Sendak's Birthday (let the wild rumpus begin!)

June 11th
Corn on the Cob day (I don't know about you, but I know how I'm gonna
celebrate...)
King Kamehameha I Day (Hawaii)

June 12th
Crowed Nest Awareness Day (when adults move back in with their parents or when grandparents are left to raise the grandchildren.)
Anne Frank's Birthday

So what are you planning to celebrate this week? I'm really going to hit Corn on the Cob day with both barrels. Yum.

ursovain

I love vanity plates. I really like the ones I have to work to guess...they're kinda like a puzzle. Here are some of my faves that I've seen over the years:

TIH2 HO (mirror image: Oh Shit)

PMPN8EZ (Pimpin' ain't easy)

NS8IABL (insatiable)

MKITSO (This made my Star Trek TNG heart smile: make it so)

IW84NO1 (I wait for no one)

IAM 007 (Bond? is that you)

GDAM8 (G'day Mate)

CD8D (sedated)

I personally want to have BCHN FCHN (Bitchin' Fiction) as my plate but it's too long. Sigh. I also considered MELODRMA but again, too long. Maybe just go with DAYDRM or MEL O

This weekend, I saw a plate that I never could decipher so I thought I'd post it on the interwebs and let you guys help me out.

SYTY2RY

Any thoughts?

the random that is mel

  • I don't like the sound of clipping toenails. It actually makes my stomach hurt.
  • I believe that going commando is not a choice, but a genetic trait.
  • I will cry if the right song comes on when I'm in the right mood.
  • I believe a good cry is good for the soul. If I haven't cried in a while, I'll watch P.S. I Love You. Works every time.
  • Laughter is a mandatory part of my daily life.
  • I read my horoscope every day and at the beginning of every month, I read my detailed horoscope at AstrologyZone.com.
  • I never buy electronics when mercury is in retrograde.
  • I used to drink a minimum of 8 diet sodas a day. I can't remember the last time I ordered one. I still drink coffee in the morning though...
  • My favorite flower is a daisy.
  • One of the best gifts I ever received was a stocking full of brand new $1 bills because I love the way new money smells.
  • Halloween is my favorite holiday. I dress up every year. This year, I'm going as She-Hulk. (yes, I will post pictures)

Hit me with some of your randomness...c'mon! I won't tell...

'Twas the day before Christmas...

It's Christmas eve, and I'm one of a handful of people in my office today. In some ways, it's cool--hello, RUN WITH SCISSORS while the bosses are out! In some ways, it sucks, though--I'd much, much rather be home. haha. So, for those of you who are stuck at work with me and have access to a computer, here are some online fun and games to check out:

--You can download the classic Elf Bowling game and wow your coworkers with your amazing ability to knock elves over!

--Into Mah Jong? Here's a Christmas Mah Jong game for ya.

--If you're an evil heathen like I am, you can watch the Ding Fries are Done guy on YouTube and laugh, laugh, laugh your work cares away.

--And last but not least, check out the picture that I found on funmunch.com (this pic made me snort out loud):

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!!

Let's play a game

I'm going to make a list of things and you guess which ones are me, and which ones aren't. How well do you know me?

  1. Jeans, T-shirt, flip-flops is my outfit of choice. TRUE
  2. I'm naturally a red-head. FALSE (naturally a dirty-blond girl)
  3. I played basketball and softball throughout high school. TRUE
  4. I turned down a softball scholarship for college. TRUE
  5. I don't like listening to Jazz. TRUE
  6. I don't like old movies. TRUE (there are rare exceptions to this...)
  7. The first feature I notice on a guy is their butt. FALSE (it's a tie between eyes and smile)
  8. My favorite flower is a daisy. TRUE
  9. My favorite animal is a poodle. FALSE (flamingo)
  10. My all-time favorite movie is Dirty Dancing. TRUE

Now, go! Which ones are true and which ones are false?

still on that island

So, we have our music, our movies and our books...

What 3 fictional characters would you take with you to the deserted island and why?

  1. MacGyver: He could build or fix anything. I'd have a sturdy house with a fully-functioning bathroom made out of cocnut shells and palm trees in 24 hours.
  2. Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother: Endless source of entertainment. Plus his actor once played a doctor on TV, so maybe some of that medical knowledge is still in there, just in case...
  3. Legolas from LOTR: I don't even think I have to explain why, but I will try. a: he could hunt. b: he's gorgeous
Who do you think you would pick?

BTW: I said MacGyver not MacGruber...

In Praise of Techno-Crack

Hi. I'm Chrissy. And I'm a Nintendork.

Can't help it. And honestly, like television, it's one of those addictions everyone wants to deny. "I don't watch television" somehow became a battle cry for intellectualism-- or at the very least, pseudo-intellectualism-- when I was in high school. I never bought it. You can't imagine the sheer volume of cricket chirping one hears at a cocktail party when one gives the response "oh yeah, I LOVE tv." It's soooo not elegant, donchaknow.

Oh well. Neither am I. But I'd rather be cool... or at worst, happy... anyway.

And so, I will introduce you to one of my closest friends... my pink Nintendo DS Lite with Leopard Skin. Oh yeah... she's a beauty. I've got the matching furry covered carrying case with the extended pockets for games, too. Yep. And the earbuds.

Weirdly, most of the games I play on her are kinda nerdy and simple. I like the classic Sonic the Hedgehog. I like Super Black Bass Pro. I like Crosswords, My Word Coach, Solitaire Overload. The only "game head" game I have or it is Assassin's Creed. If you don't like Assassin's Creed we may not be able to be friends.

I mean, I'll try, but I don't know...

I just think that television, video games, and dorking around on the internet can be good things. And shunning technology in order to look more refined seems not only snobbish, but stupid.

You don't have to be hooked in like a character in The Matrix. You don't have to spend hours at a time zoning out with your gaze pinned to a portable gaming system. And now the Wii has exercise programs for it. Imagine that-- video games that are good for your health!

So yeah... I'm a user. I don't care for any pamphlets pointing me toward a 12 step recovery program, thanks. I like my pink pal. And I'm not ashamed of it.

So how about you? Any techno-crack in your life? Share!

Sweet bliss, I'm done! Funny pics to celebrate

I finished the first-round revisions on STUPID CUPID book 1 yesterday. I'm so thrilled with how it came out--I added 40 new pages of material to the manuscript. That's no small thing for me, considering I tend to write on the very short side. haha

I am also a little brain-dead, so today's post is going to be comprised of funny pictures I found on the Internet. I love digging up little gems and sharing them with the class. haha.

Ahh, Prom!

Ahhh prom... the dress, the corsage, the giddy feeling as your date comes to pick you up in a big limo. Or so I hear. I've witnessed a prom or two, but never attended one. I, you see, was an uber nerd.

No... no, not sorta-kinda. I was a massive, black-wearing, pre-goth, post-beatnik, way out of time and space nerd. I used to skip school for two things: Red Sox games and to take the MBTA into Boston and lurk among the stacks of the Boston Public Library. I also skipped to go see a few touring shows at the Museum of Fine Arts of Museum of Science.

Yes. THAT much of a geek.

I was also on a different schedule. When other kids were just discovering the giddiness of first love, I was buried up to my neck in college. I wanted a copy of the Riverside Shakespeare for my 15th birthday.

But missing out on a lot of the social stuff made me love watching as a teacher. When I taught one spring in Abington, MA they not only had a prom, they had a big promenade-- every parent in town came out with cameras and all the kids "promenaded" around the gym. It was... well, dorky and sweet and saturated in saccharine cuteness. I ate it up with a spoon. A few of those kids were on dates I even set up.

"I'm not going, it's lame," they'd say, and you'd hear "plus who would go with me?" They didn't say it, but you could hear it. So I'd con two old friends into going. I'll have you know one of those couples hooked up, went steady til graduation, and married a few years later.

I was the COOL English teacher.

Which is funny when you think that in high school, which was so short for me, I felt like the world's biggest dork. People loved my brothers. Star athletes. Most of them, though, looked askance at me like I was from another planet. I felt it, then, as judgment and rejection of myself and my small group of nerdy-artsy beach rat friends. We didn't go to football games, but we sang a capella in the tide-pools on Green Harbor beach. We had sketchbooks and journals filled with dark, scary poetry. We brooded.

But you know... years later, after Harvard and Oxford convinced me that weird has its uses, I have benefited from staying in my small town. Kids I once thought of as rejecting me live down the street. The girl I thought looked down her nose at me sees me at the deli all the time. And I am friendly by nature. So it came as a mild but pleasant surprise when I discovered that's not how they saw me at all.

"She was sooo smart," Colleen recently said to one of her boys as we stood in line at CVS. "She had a horse. She could sing and was in a band. And she always knew the answer when the teacher called on her. I always felt stupid in class with her."

She was smiling when she said it, but I nearly fell over. It was Easter time. Colleen was the girl the other girls wanted to hang out with. I was stunned to think she even gave me a glance, much less had such a fixed opinion of me.

I guess the gift of being the geek who came home to roost is finding out many-- perhaps even MOST-- of those kids in the seats next to you aren't any more what you thought THEY were than you are what they thought YOU were.

So maybe I wasn't as dorky as I thought. Or maybe I WAS, but dorky was ok. And I never got to go to prom. But I'm glad girls like Colleen did, and that the truth is she was just having a good time, not thinking about the people who stayed home.

Being a nerd still, you might think I would snort at things like prom. Academics, please! Serious study! But fun is good for your soul, too. And frankly every experience we can cram into our youth is worth having. So I always smile when I see girls in sweatsuits leaving the hairdresser's with baby's breath in a updo. Or a frazzled mom at the florist growling into her cell phone "what kind of blue?" Ahh... prom!
