new beginnings

I started a new job yesterday. I haven't worked full-time in over 2 years, so this is very exciting for me. It's also the reason I missed blogging yesterday as well. Sorry y'all.

I'm trying to focus my life with all the crazy changes I've been experiencing, but as you know, life doesn't always let you do that. It throws you curve balls and makes you swing for the fence and when you whiff and miss, you wind up spinning around without direction.

I went to the beach last week to relax before this new chapter in my life. Me and 8 other women enjoyed the sand, sun, and surf (maybe a little too much). I did a lot of soul searching--(also known as lying on the beach) and what I came up with is this:

To be happy, I have to leave the past in the past. I have to refocus and move forward. I need to be happy, healthy, laugh, and I can't settle for anything less than the best in my life. Because even though I oftentimes don't think I deserve the best, I know in my heart I do.

Many, many thanks to my girls for helping me soul search. It just wouldn't have happened without them.

I Hate Jellyfish

I'm on vacay right now in Hilton Head. It's been a great trip...until I got stung.

So there I was, happily jumping waves with my baby in my arms. She was squealing with delight and we were having a great time. All of a sudden there was a sharp searing pain first in my left leg, then a few seconds later it spread to my right leg. It felt like someone was stabbing knives into both of my legs...or perhaps a shark had dug his teeth in and was gnawing away.

Needless to say, I started screaming my head off. I wasn't scared so much for myself (OK, yes I was), but more for my baby. See, I was convinced I was going to drop her into the ocean at this point.

It probably just took a few seconds before my husband got to me and took her away from me, but in those seconds, I was convinced we were both going to be dragged away my sharks. It was probably the scariest experience of my life.

The whole time, my dad was trying to tell me I'd just stepped on a shell and was fine. Well, he was right that there were no sharks, but it was considerably worse than simply stepping on a shell.

I limped out of the water, because my this point, both my legs had started to swell up. It was low tide, so I had a very far way to go to get to the lifeguard station, and I couldn't straighten either leg, so I was limping with both legs bent, tears streaming down my face.

The lifeguards sprayed my legs down with vinegar and told me to pack it with wet sand. Then a gentleman offered me some shaving cream, which really did the trick.

By the time we got back to the beach house, the welts were still there, but maybe a tenth of what they had been. It no longer felt like a shark was ripping my leg apart, but it still stung badly.

It's been almost 24 hours and now I just have a low-grade stinging sensation left, but it's still there. And the welts are still there.

I think I'll pass on the beach today.

Road Trip!

As you're reading this, I'm probably on the road, driving to Hilton Head Island, SC. Unless it's after about 1 pm, in which case, I am now sunbathing on the beach. Unless it's raining. (Please don't be raining!)

Mr. Brice and I left DC at 3 am. Yes, I know that's insanely early. I'd originally wanted to leave after work on Wed evening and drive halfway, go eat yummy barbeque somewhere in Eastern North Carolina (mmm...), spend the night in a hotel, and then continue in the morning. But Mr. Brice rightly pointed out that we'd just be stuck in traffic for a long time.

So 3 am Thursday morning it is. Why didn't we leave later? Well, because I am determined to lay out this afternoon. And the traffic is really light when there are no cars on the road.

Anyway, depending on when you read this, I'll either be on the road, stopping for breakfast (likely around 7 am at one of the 25792735923 Cracker Barrels along I-95), or on the beach. Or if you don't get to it until Thurs night, there's a good chance I'm eating seafood, playing board games with my parents, or having drinks down at Harbor Town.

And hopefully I got my revisions back to my agent before I left. LOL!

So, anyone have any fun plans for Labor Day weekend?

things to do on a rainy day

I'm at the beach. It's raining. Hard.

Here is a list of things I can do today:

  1. Read
  2. Write
  3. Watch movies
  4. Do Aerobics
  5. Clean
  6. Play the game of Life
  7. Play Guitar Hero or Rock Band
  8. Laundry
  9. Bake or cook something comforting
  10. Pick my nose
  11. Eat, drink, and be merry
  12. Decorate for Christmas
  13. Coordinate my outfits for the next week.
  14. Color my hair (probably red since I have a thing)
  15. Get inked

These are my options. Can you pick out the items that I won't be doing?

Do you have any other suggestions?
